Ascended Masters Part I: Saint Harriet
(2024)

Hand-cut collage, acrylic paint, found images from vintage magazines & books

The subject of this collage is one of my favorite muse’s: Harriet Tubman. I’ve placed her amongst images that have been strongholds and manifestations of colonialism and white supremacy—a Renaissance-style ceiling painting with white angels; and an image of the funeral service of Winston Churchill. I have taken the liberty of re-appropriating these images to pay homage to the great abolitionist—blotting out the faces of the angels and funeral congregants. The grandeur of the cathedral’s architecture, the romanticism and beauty of angelic beings, create a sense of wonder, now in service to liberation.
