“When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was so much glory over every thing; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven.” - Harriet Tubman (2024)

The images in this collage are primarily sourced from vintage Ebony and Architectural Digest magazines. The imagery includes African American hair advertisements, home interior scenes, a ballet class, an image of Miss Black America 1969, a vintage shapewear ad, a little black girl in a white dress, and several other photos, all selected to form a larger image and representation of western beauty ideals and societal expectations placed on female identifying folks. An image of a black woman is breaking through the top layers of tulle fabric, freeing herself by any means necessary.
